About the AGC
History of the AGC
The Association of Guernsey Charities was formed in 1984 when a handful of local organisations decided to work together to share ideas and encourage charitable and community work on the island.
In the early days the focus was on co-operation and discussing common issues and concerns. Members were also able to help each other and work together on larger events.
The Association printed its first Directory of Charitable Organisations in 1984, which has been reissued several times due to growing membership. It has proved a valuable tool for anyone wanting to work with charities in Guernsey. There are now more than 300 members of the association.
In 2000 the Association launched its first website, providing not only a digital version of the directory, but also expanded the information available for both the public and members. Charities can now access a large repository of information to help them govern and manage their organisations, as well as publish information about their activities and events. Members can also use the Association’s sister websites volunteer.gg and giving.gg to post volunteer opportunities and raise funds.
The Association celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2024 with a reception hosted by the Chief Minister and the launch of the #Withoutus campaign, highlighting the huge impact the charitable sector has on Bailiwick society.
